It is sprayed as a liquid and quickly expands to fill the space, creating an air barrier and insulator all in one step. It sticks to everything it is applied to, making it ideal for small and hard-to-reach places.
• Fiberglass insulation: This popular insulation, made of glass fibers, can be installed as batts or blown-in. Fiberglass is commonly used in attics but can be effective in other areas as well. Batts are installed in unfinished walls in new construction while blown-in insulation is installed by blowing loose fiberglass fibers into open attic areas or spaces.
• Cellulose insulation: Cellulose insulation contains up to 85% recycled newspaper and is an excellent choice for insulating attics. Loose cellulose fibers are blown into closed walls and cavities in a drill-and-fill style through a small hole with a special blower, densely packing the area with insulation.
• Blow-in blanket system (BIBS®): The blow-in blanket system, also known as BIBS®, utilizes specially formulated loose-fill fiberglass insulation to insulate open wall cavities. Special BIBS® netting, or insulation fabric, is attached to the wall’s frame and then each cavity is densely packed with loose-fill insulation using a special blower. It is frequently used as wall insulation in new construction.
• Air sealing: Most insulations work as insulators, not air barriers. Before installing fiberglass or BIBS® insulation it is important to seal any small gaps or holes in your newly constructed home that could leak valuable air. Sealing these air leaks will save you money on your energy bills.
