Many multifamily building owners rely on the standard types of insulation such as fiberglass or cellulose to keep their multifamily structure comfortable throughout the year. But another insulation option has gained popularity as an alternative to other types of insulation for multifamily homes and buildings. Known as rock wool, this inorganic, naturally fire-resistant insulation option offers a similar, and often higher, R-value than other insulation products and may be the perfect choice for your Rockford multifamily building.
Metro Insulation can lead you in the right direction when it comes to what kind of insulation will perform the best in your home. Call (815) 986-7736 today to book an appointment.
Rock wool insulation, also known as mineral wool, is composed mainly of volcanic basalt rock and a recycled steel-making byproduct called slag. The rock and slag are superheated until liquefied and then mixed and stretched into thin pliable fibers. These fibers resemble wool and are compressed into a mat and then cut into batts. Rock wool can also come as rolls or loose-fill insulation.
Rock wool insulation can be used in any application where fiberglass insulation or other types of insulation are typically used. It is highly recommended in areas where fire resistance is needed thanks to its inorganic makeup, and rock wool batts are ideal for soundproofing between floors. These factors make rock wool a perfect insulation choice for multifamily buildings.
The two biggest benefits of rock wool are its fire resistance and its soundproofing capabilities. Due to its composition, it is naturally highly flame retardant and does not require fire-retardant treatments used in other types of insulation. It delays the spread of fire between rooms, helping your building to remain standing longer and protecting residents. This provides valuable extra minutes to save people and property and minimize environmental damage.
When you install rock wool batts between the floors of your multifamily building you will maximize its soundproofing abilities. Your residents will enjoy the quieter environment and soon forget they live in a multifamily building.
Rock wool has many other benefits as well:
